This is one of the activities that I was really looking forward to. My research show that the Rangitikei River has one of the best Grade 5 rafting in NZ. It’s a bit out of the way but I thought I was going to do rafting once here I might as well go big!
The River Valley Lodge is run by a family and has an integrated accommodation. Stayed in the dorm room and for the second time I got the room for myself. The sky was so dark that night that I can actually see traces of the milky way with my naked eyes. So bracing the cold and the darkness, I tried capturing the milky way for the first time. It was not bad at all, except for the lack of an interesting object to give the picture a context, now I know why shooting milky way at the Church of the Good Shepherd is so popular.
It was a cold night and the morning was no different. We’re put on thick wetsuit with fleece and windbreaker on top and off we go. The first couple of minutes was calm water but eventually we get to more and more serious, challenging rapids. It was fun, despite the 10-12 degree water. Most of us even jumped in and swim. Some of the rapids are quite fierce, pretty tall drop. All in all, it was an awesome experience. We close it off with a jump off a cliff of about 6-7m tall. Now my friends will know I always freak out jumping, but I pushed myself and I jumped… woohoo.
Just before checking out, I noted they also have horseriding. Hey, it was a very nice day and I got time so why not. I went along, and it was quite nice to be on a horse and actually know how to steer them, on top of an excellent landscape and weather. Awesome day!
