SNOWBOARDING TREBLE CONE

15 Sep

I made it to New Zealand! After a short transit in Sydney, I landed in Queenstown. Car rental pick-up was easy, setting things up was not. Took a while to get audio working, but the most frustrating thing was the google maps app does not support multiple destinations. It’s bizarre since the web maps support this, and I’m pretty sure I’ve used this in my trip to Malaysia only 6 months ago. It seems like the recent updates (now version 9) is worse, so I’m working on downgrading myself to version 6.14.1. WTF Google!

My first stop was Queenstown, which gave me the first glimpse of New Zealand. Such a beautiful place, the landscape is simply amazing and there’s not many cars in the street which makes driving a real pleasure. Next is a quick stop in Cromwell. There’s nothing in Cromwell I would say, went to check the Melmore Terrace heritage town. Off we go to Wanaka. Charming little town. I’m here for snowboarding for 3 days.

Treble Cone snowfield is ~30 mins drive from Wanaka. Fantastic sceneries along the way. There’s also this snaking dirt road up to the mountain once you’re off the main highway. Treble Cone is the largest ski area in New Zealand, opens 9am-4pm. I would say it’s not bad, with blue sky, nice views and pretty decent snow though it gets a bit slushy after 2pm.

Wanaka is a relatively small town, and the YHA Wanaka where I’m staying is quite well located. On first night, I went to Capriccio which is known for slow roast lamb shoulder for dinner. It was so huge that I couldn’t finish it. For ~NZD40 I think it’s pretty good deal. The Water Bar on lakeside is also not bad, big plate of mussels and calamaris for NZD10-15.

I noticed that Cinema Paradiso is highly rated, so I checked it out. It’s a restaurant/cinema with unique setup. It just happens that Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is on so I went because what else is better than watching Ethan Hunt after a day of snowboarding! It is an interesting cinema instead with different chair setup. I got the double couch and it was comfy!

Anyways, I’m struggling with my photoshot, somehow it feels like there’s lots of noise and the circular polarizer is not working well. Some work to do to figure this out.

Queenstown/Glenorchy next!
