Waitomo is a very popular destination for its glowworm cave. Apparently these glowworm are only found in Australia and New Zealand. They’re actually that larvae stage of an insect that glows due to some enzyme that has some light and yadda yadda yadda, it glows beautifully in the caves.
I did a Black Labyrinth with Blackwater Rafting, which is essentially tubing through the cave water system. It was quite a cold day, so we’re all suited up in 5mm wetsuite with hood and everything. I must say initially going into those really small tight places is a bit intimidating (reminded me of the Cu Chi tunnel in Saigon!) but after a while you get used to it. Tubing itself is quite fun, you don’t have to do much and the rapid will just take you gently.
There were parts of the ride we did in complete darkness, just cruising, looking up at the glowworm. It’s quite nice. Also, because it’s a cave, it’s basically natural concert hall so singing is encouraged!
Unfortunately we’re officially not allowed to bring gopro into the cave and I didn’t so photos below are snapped by the guides. But if you’re going, just bring your camera or gopro along quietly and take your own pictures they won’t stop you!
